The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg IPA VI-A Greece-Albania programme.
The SDSLeaD project constitutes a comprehensive strategic intervention designed to modernize water management systems and drastically reduce the alarming rates of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) within the cross-border region of Greece and Albania. By establishing a sophisticated Decision Support System (DSS) that integrates Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure with high-fidelity Digital Twins and advanced mathematical modeling, the project transitions water utility management from a reactive to a predictive operational model. This technological framework allows for the continuous monitoring of hydraulic parameters in real-time, enabling the immediate detection of anomalies and the optimization of pressure management to prevent infrastructure fatigue. The core actions of the project encompass the systematic installation of smart metering equipment and pressure sensors across the pilot networks of Kozani and Korce, followed by the development of a virtual simulation environment that mirrors the physical assets of the water utilities. Beyond technical deployment, the project includes specialized training for technical staff, the creation of a common cross-border protocol for leakage management, and the implementation of pilot applications to validate the energy savings and water conservation achieved through the system. By addressing the critical Water-Energy Nexus, SDSLeaD not only secures vital natural resources but also significantly minimizes the energy footprint of pumping and distribution processes. These integrated actions foster long-term climate resilience and cross-border synergy, ultimately aligning local infrastructure with the ambitious environmental mandates of the European Green Deal and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
